Waterfall and meandering stream, spool swimming pool, barbeque island, comfortable furniture, outdoor fireplace design - this Northern California garden has it all.
When the Lumans purchased a bare lot in a popular Northern California Oak studded retirement community- their labor of love patio garden began. Bev Luman, the driving force behind the creation of this space, desired a laid-back atmosphere that would enhance the natural beauty of the environment, while staying in tune with the Mediterranean theme of the home. Floyd Luman chuckles over Bev’s intense involvement in the project, “Bev bought this patio furniture before we even broke ground on the house- she knew exactly what she wanted”. The patio area is truly an extension of the home's interior. For warmth in the winter not only does the patio have a gas fireplace, but there is also a ceiling mounted radiant heater to keep the Lumans and their guests warm and cozy during those chilly winter get-togethers. A fully equipped barbeque island is always ready for service - providing plenty of bar-stool counter space, a refrigerator, typical barbeque and a griddle for cooking Saturday morning breakfast. Because the gated community is situated in a natural environment, browsing deer are a major concern as they can ruin a newly planted garden in one day. Therefore, a skilled Sacramento area landscape designer experienced in deer resistant design was employed. Luckily, deer find many plants unpalatable. Ornamental grasses and other non-palatable trees and shrubs were integrated that flow nicely with the two water features that were fitted into the garden. Loving the sound and look of water moving through a garden, the Lumans desired a hand-built waterfall with an integrated flowing creek to end at a small pond. Taking advantage of a down-slope in the left corner of the garden, the designer positioned the waterfall on this high natural contour. The small meandering stream gracefully flows and ends at a small koi pond near the main patio space. Algae controll is aided with the installation of two ultraviolet light filters. They also desired a small pool to cool off during their hot Mediterranean summers that could be used as a spa during the winter. The Spool (cross between a spa and pool) was positioned just outside the master bedroom courtyard and close to the main patio entertainment area. Boulders were used for the water feature to unify with the other water feature making the garden flow in continuity. This natural garden design is a success because it provides the homeowners satisfaction of their needs and desires. Employing the services of a skilled and reputable landscape designer provides many positive benefits. It is well documented that a beautiful garden can be healing. Also, the homeowner and guests will enjoy the visual beauty of the garden, and property values are enhanced.
